What do we study in RMPE?

CORE RME [S1 – S4]

RMS is a core subject from S1-S4. Every year-group undertakes at least one religion unit, one morality/ethics unit and one philosophy unit per year.

We aim to learn from and learn about religion. We examine what people believe, where they get their beliefs from and what they do with their beliefs. We look at the stories and myths that lie behind people’s beliefs and discuss them alongside non-religious and scientific ways of looking at the world.

We place emphasis on the teaching of reflective and critical thinking skills.

S2 – Creation Myths, Poverty, Christianity
S3 – Medical Ethics, Science & Religion, Islam
S4 – Conspiracy Theories, Hate Crimes, The Holocaust

SQA RMPS [S4 – S6]

A similar pattern is followed in National 4/5 RMPS and Higher RMPS, where pupils study a World Religion, an issue of Morality & Belief, and a Religious & Philosophical Question [RPQ].

Word Religion: Judaism, Christianity
Morality & Belief: Medical Ethics, War
Religious & Philosophical Questions: the Existence of God, the Origin of the Universe.

In past years we have offered Higher Philosophy as a follow-up to Higher RMPS.

We have also had candidates progress from Higher to Advanced Higher RMPS.

In addition, the SQA’s Religion, Beliefs & Values Award is offered as a short senior elective.
