Why do we study RMPE?

If the question is “what does IVF stand for?”, “what is an embryo?” or “which countries allow abortion?” then Google has the answer.

If the question is “is it right to defy nature?”, “is an embryo a person?” or “is abortion morally acceptable?” then Google does not have the answer.

But moral questions like this must be discussed, because we need laws. Tackling these questions requires the critical thinking skills that we practise in RME.

If the question is “what is a menorah?”, “how many pillars of Islam are there?” or “when was the Bible written?” then Google has the answer.

If the question is “do people need shared beliefs?”, “are some beliefs dangerous?”, “are we free to believe what we want?” then Google does not have the answer.

But questions about belief must be discussed – we have to live together even though we are not all the same. Tackling these questions requires the reflective thinking skills that we practise in RME.

  • If you let other people’s beliefs dictate your behaviour…
  • If you dishonestly try to get other to believe you…
  • If you’re happy for others to make your moral decisions…
  • If you reckon your beliefs don’t need to be justified…
  • If you follow laws without question…

…then you’ll never need RME.

But…

  • Your behaviour reflects your beliefs.
  • You are honest about your beliefs.
  • You make your own moral decisions.
  • You are prepared to stand up for what you believe in.
  • Laws must be questioned.

That’s why you do RME.
