OVERVIEW

In first year, we help you develop your understanding in four areas.

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Information Handling
  • Shape

These areas are detailed on the following pages.

NUMBER

Our study of number splits into the following areas:

  • Place value and order of operations (BIDMAS)
  • Negative Numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Percentages, with and without a calculator

Numeracy lessons will focus on how we use number in real life. We will look at budgeting, crime investigation, design and more…

ALGEBRA

Algebra is using symbols to help us solve problems. We will help you understand

  • Why we use symbols
  • How we use symbols to represent a situation–
  • How to solve equations
  • How to link symbols with the order of operations (substitution)

INFORMATION HANDLING

Information Handling is the study of data and statistics. In first year, we will look at a wide range of graphs and charts:

  • Bar Graphs and compound bar graphs
  • Line Graphs
  • Pie Charts

We will also discuss how people sometimes use graphs to mislead us.

We will also study Probability – the chance of particular events occurring.

SHAPE

Our work on shape looks at the following:

  • Measurement of shape (perimeter, area, volume)
  • Symmetry
  • Co-ordinates, including negative numbers

SCOTTISH MATHS WEEK

Hopefully, we are able to take part in Scottish Maths Week this year (usually in late September).
Last year, all of S1 took part in a construction challenge.
Our Sierpinski Tetrahedron almost stood up! There were 1024 mini tetrahedrons in the final build.
